What I Got For Christmas

Urban Decay Naked Basics 2: This was the first thing I found in my stocking. I know I'm really late on this bandwagon, but this is my first product from the Urban Decay Naked line. I don't have much of a matte shadow collection at this point and it's great to have neutrals especially with my current bold lip obsession. And it's going to be especially great for travelling.

Fierce Magenta Lipstick in Mystical Forest: This one was from my girlfriend. I've been looking for a nice dark green lipstick because it's my favourite colour and so she got me one! We've both heard great things about this brand and it swatches like a dream so I can't wait to try it.

Body Shop Makeup Brush Set: These were in my stocking. They're really going to come in handy because I'm at my parents' house and I forgot to bring any brushes! So I'm definitely going to use these if I end up with any New Years Eve plans.

Sephora Gift Card: I got this from my sister and immediately started spending it in my head. I'm going to try and be practical with this though and maybe not spend it all at once.

Body Shop Cocoa Butter Lip Care Stick: This was also in my stocking. It is so so hydrating! I'm really impressed. And it smells awesome.

MAC Lip Pencil in Nightmoth: This gift was from Lauren of Lipstick + Lacquer. When we went to IMATS I went looking for it but it sold out before we got there, so I suggested Lauren get it for me for Christmas. It's my first MAC lip liner, and also my first high end lip liner, and I can't wait to use it.

Kat Von D Liquid Lipstick in Berlin and Studded Kiss in Lolita: These two came in a set, also from Lauren (She spoils me <3) I wore Berlin on Boxing Day and I love it! I haven't tried Lolita yet but I love the Studded Kiss Lipsticks and when I swatched it it looked really nice with my skin tone.

e.l.f Lip Exfoliator: Yet another gift from Lauren! I used this with Berlin when I wore it and I think it made a huge difference. The lipstick style applicator is great and it smells kind of like a MAC lipstick which I love.

Bath and Body Works Lotions in French Lavender and Honey, Sea Island Cotton and Japanese Cherry Blossom: These are from my friend Robyn. You can never have too much lotion, and the small Bath and Body Works bottles are super cute and portable. I especially love the Cherry Blossom because that's Robyn's favourite so the smell reminds me of her.

Wacom Intuos Tablet: This blog might be getting a little prettier! A while back I lost the pen to my old tablet, which was about ten years old anyway, so this Christmas my parents were nice enough to buy me a new one. It's taking a bit to get used to, but hopefully you'll be seeing some of the work from it soon.

Alex and Ani Bracelet: This was from my parents. I love boats so this bracelet is perfect. I've also been meaning to buy more bracelets, I think they're going to be my next jewelry phase, now that I seem to be getting over rings.

The "Me Time" Tag

Lauren tagged me to do this tag almost two weeks ago and I finally have some time so here we go!

THE QUESTIONS:

What do you watch or read during me-time?
I have an awful habit and it's marathoning tv shows. Currently I'm caught up on everything and looking for something new so let me know in the comments if you have any recommendations.
I also love curling up with a blanket and an old movie, especially anything with Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly.

And then there's always YouTube, I've been much better about keeping up with my subscriptions lately, which is good with all these Vlogmas videos and holiday gift guides that keep popping up every day.

As far as books go, I'm an English major, so books are less me time and more school time lately, but I'm going to try to read more for pleasure in the new year

What do you wear during me-time?
Pyjamas! I got some new flannel pjs from the mens section at Old Navy (for $9!) and honestly it was one of the greatest purchases of my life I love them. And then there is the beauty seen above: my Wonder Woman onesie, which is one of the best purchases of my whole life.

What are your me-time beauty products?
I don't really have any go tos at this point, I keep trying samples but I haven't found anything that stands out in the pampering department. I'm still on the hunt though! I did however, just arrive at my parents' house, where I keep my I Love... Strawberries and Cream (which I just realized is turned to the French side in the picture, oh well) I keep it here so that I'll use it less often and it'll last longer. I got it from my girlfriend for Valentine's Day this year and I just love it a lot it smells so wonderful.

Current favourite nail polish?
My new favourite is one I picked up at IMATS last month, OPI Bastille My Heart. It's a sort of burgundy with a subtle but of shimmer and I'm in love.

What do you eat/drink during me-time?
I've been getting more into tea lately and my favourite is vanilla rooibos. It just tastes warm and nice. And my snacks really vary but one of my favourites is apples with peanut butter.

Current favourite candle?
Holiday Apple Crisp from Bath and Body Works. Oh my god it's heaven.

Do you ever have outdoor me-time?
I like to go for walks around my neighbourhood sometimes, but actual nature is a bit intimidating for me, I'll leave that to the professionals.

Would you ever go see a movie alone?
I love going to the movies by myself! When I see movies with other people I tend to stress out about them enjoying themselves and it takes me out of the experience a bit. When I see movies by myself I can just relax and enjoy.

Favourite online shop?
I love Modcloth but sometimes it makes me sad because my student budget doesn't really allow for that kind of spending. On the more affordable end I love Forever 21. But I'm always searching for boat print items and that tends to take me all over the web.

Anything to add? What else do you do during me-time?
I like to get dressed up and do my makeup and take selfies. It's just really fun to feel fancy and cute.

I tag Stasia (stasialikescakes) (sorry I keep tagging you)

The Christmas Tag

I was tagged by Lauren to do the Christmas Tag! She also tagged me to do the me time tag a while back and that should be up soon too.

1. Do you like to stay in your PJ’s, or dress up for Christmas?
Christmas morning in the Willis household is a strictly pyjama occasion, but I like to get dressed up for dinner.

2. Do you open your presents Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?
Christmas morning, but one gift on Christmas Eve and it's always pyjamas.

3. What’s your favorite Christmas meal or treat?
We usually go for the whole turkey dinner thing and that's not really my favourite. I do however, love sugar cookies and gingerbread cookies. You'll probably be seeing some in the near future on this blog because decorating cookies is one of my favourite activities this time of year.

4. What’s your favorite holiday movie (or specials)?
As I write this me and my roommate are watching Holiday in Handcuffs which is an awful movie but it's a tradition in this house. My favourite Christmas movie is The Year Without A Santa Claus.

5. Have you ever made a snowman?
Yesss, lots. I really want to make one this year but we haven't gotten much good packing snow yet. Fingers crossed I'll be able to make one soon.

6. Show us an embarrassing Christmas Card photo!

My family doesn't do Christmas Cards, but I did take a family photo with my roommates so I'll show you that. It's not embarrassing though so :P

7. What holiday tradition are you looking forward to most this year?
Family dinner! This year is going to be my girlfriend's first year at my parents' house for Christmas and I'm just excited to do all the usual things with her there.

8. Is your Christmas tree real or fake?
Fake. I've never had a real tree before, I'm really hoping to have one at some point.

9. Be honest: do you like giving gifts or receiving gifts better?
Giving! I used to love getting presents more than anything but now I love the look on someone's face when they open the perfect gift.

10. What would be your dream place to visit for the holiday season?
Disney World! Not on Christmas, because I really like to spend it with my family, but while they have all the Christmas decorations/events definitely.

11. Does your family have a special holiday recipe you like to help make?
My nanny's butter tarts! They're the thing that we make the most often of hers but that's still reserved for special occasions.

12. Most memorable Holiday moment?
We have this video from when my sisters were really little of my eldest sister opening a present and saying "It's what I always wanted... what is it?" and now we quote it every year.

13. What made you realize the truth about Santa?
Someone at school told me I think?

14. Favorite Christmas songs?
This year I decided I was going to pick my favourite Christmas song so I did an informal poll of my friends and family and eventually decided Let it Snow is my favourite. I have a of of other favourites though and I'm not gonna start listing or we'll be here forever.

15. Do you make New Years resolutions? Do you stick to them?
I try! This year my plan is to sort out what I want to do with my life, and also to try again to improve my French.

16. What makes the Holidays special for you?
Time with family and friends! We don't get to spend much time all together, because I live an hour + away from my family and a lot of my friends, so I'm excited to see everyone.

I tag Stasia! and anyone else reading this who wants to do it.

Lazy Beauty Tips Lipstick Challenge Roundup #2

About a month ago I made a post about the lipstick challenge I'm doing. (you can find it here) Basically the idea is to wear all your lipsticks (one a day) and document it on social media. The one problem is that I have a lot of lipstick. Because of that, and various stuff going on in my life, this challenge is taking f o r e v e r. Before my plan was to do weekly roundups, but I've been wearing lipstick so infrequently, or rewearing ones I've already used for the challenge, that it hasn't seemed worth it to post them here. So I guess I'm just going to post these on no particular schedule?

But anyways, here's roundup two! 45 down, 11 to go!

Review: Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Poe

When I saw this lipstick, I knew I had to have it. Sadly when I went to go get it, it was sold out. And that kept happening, again and again. I usually don't talk to Sephora employees, but this time I figured it was worth it. So I ended up getting on the waiting list, and last week I got the call and me and my girlfriend headed out to the mall.

(beginning of the day! aka bus #1)

I got around to trying it today and I'm smitten. The colour is so deep and pigmented. The smell is similar to MAC lipsticks with a sort of vanilla smell that's noticeable when you first put it on, but goes away within half an hour or so. The only real problem with it is that it a tiny bit drying. It's not a real problem at first, especially with a lip balm underneath, throughout the day it gets a fair bit drier. I feel like the dryness is par for the course with darker shades though.

(side note: chestnut praline lattes are the bomb)

It's fairly long wearing, I touched it up after eating and drinking, because it did come off a bit. It's been about ten hours, and when I asked my mom how my lipstick looked she said "fine" (she's not a fan of the dark lip look) It's a little hard to apply, if only because the darkness of the colour requires a fair amount of precision. Next time I think I'd use a lip brush, and maybe a liner too.

(end of the day! aka bus #3)

Overall I love this lipstick, it's smooth, it's super wearable as far as non standard colours go, and it's super pigmented. I'd give this lipstick a 9/10!

October Favourites 2014

Stormbird Cafe Handmade Soaps: I have been waiting so long to get my hands on these, and finally, at the end of September they went on limited sale. They all smell heavenly and they're really moisturizing. Not to mention how fall-ish all these warm coffeehouse scents are.

MAC Lipsticks in Cyber and Media: Everyone's been rocking the vampy lip trend, and I'm no exception. I've been trying to keep up with the LBT Lipstick Challenge but it's hard because I want to wear these every day.

Figs & Rouge Hand Cream in Mango Mandarin: I got this in my October ipsy bag and I think it's one of my favourite things I've gotten so far. I love fruity scents and the packaging is so adorable and bright. It's great to keep in my purse to keep my skin from succumbing to it's usual terrible fall/winter dryness.

Jersey Shore Sun Mongongo Nutrient Dense Anti-Aging Lip Conditioner in Mango Green Orange Ginger: The name is a bit of mouthful, but it smells great and it's super hydrating. I got this in my September ipsy bag, but only really started using it this month when I lost my usual lip balm.

elf Eyelid Primer: Okay so this one barely counts because I bought it on the 30th but I just wanted to give it an honourable mention because wow! It was $2 at Target and it works like a charm. I'm honestly so impressed with it. I was considering going and buying more Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, but I think I'm going to stick with this one for a while.

Sweetpea and Fay Order!

So a few weeks ago I was looking for a purple blush and a friend recommended I check out Sweetpea & Fay Cosmetics. They had exactly what I wanted and I was so pleased. In addition to the lavender blush, I checked out their collection of liquid lipsticks.

So the two things I ended up getting were their mineral blush in Lady Slipper and their liquid lipstick "J'adore Les Levres" in Scuba Gear. Shipping took a bit of time, but it was well worth the wait! The first think I noticed is that packaging is pretty cute. Simple, practical, but cute.

(swatch pics taken outside because it was 7am* and not bright enough inside)

I'm super happy with the blush! It looks just as great on as I expected. The colour shows up well, and though it fades within a few hours, the colour remained noticeable right up until I took off my makeup at the end of the day.

The lipstick was surprising. I expected the consistency to be more similar to Stila or Kat Von D's liquid lipsticks, or maybe even an OCC Lip Tar. Instead it's VERY thick, and super creamy. It goes on very thick and very pigmented. And it smells like vanilla. And it even comes with a little lip brush. It stays pretty well, as long as you don't eat anything. The moment you do, it's all gone except for at the edges. But that's par for the course with most lipsticks so I'm still pretty impressed.

However despite my bravery, the shade I got is not super wearable, and might be saved only for special occasions (at least until I get braver). I do really like it though. I might try and work out things to pair it with.

(like my no makeup no sleep look?)

Now I'm just wishing I would have ordered more! I'm especially interested in their Strangely Wearable blush collection, as it's inspired by sci fi, and that's basically my ideal situation. Next time!

So I'm going to give the blush a 9/10, and the liquid lipstick an 8/10!

*7am post all nighter, not up early 7am. I bet you can tell by the amount of exclamation points.

Review: Miss Manga Mascara

As long as I can remember I've wanted colourful mascara. I mean, I wanted colourful hair but colourful eyelashes seemed like a more reasonable goal. So when I saw that L'Oreal Miss Manga Mascara came in three bright shades, I was excited.

I contained myself, and didn't buy it right away, but a few days ago I was in the cosmetics aisle prepping for my back to school look and I picked it up.

There was only one thing I forgot to take into account: my nearly black eyelashes.

So I went online in search of a primer that was actually white, instead of just being a base coat. Two options came up, spending $11 on the L'Oreal Double Extend Mascara only to use one end, or spending $5 on the Hard Candy Primer that didn't have white colouration, but white fibers.

Talking about the latter led to a rather funny conversation with my roommate in which I tried to explain the concept and she ended up referring to the stuff in it as "debris" which after buying it, I'm not inclined to argue.

Not only did I buy the Hard Candy one, I also bought the L'Oreal one... which was kind of a bad idea. The Hard Candy one was a good primer, I don't have anything bad to say about it, but it didn't suit my purpose, it didn't make the purple show. So I moved on to the L'Oreal one, which was actually was white in colour, or at least more white than the Hard Candy one.

This was not a success. The combination of the Double Extend primer and the Miss Manga mascara was not a good one. It clumped and was sticky and the colour still didn't show up.

Rather than give up entirely on all the products, I decided to give the Double Extend a try as it's supposed to be used, with it's own mascara. When you use it right, it's much less disappointing! (pictured left) It's not a contender for favourite mascara, but I regret the money I spent on it much less
than I thought I did.

At that point I'd put so much effort into trying to make this mascara work that I didn't want to give up just yet. My next idea was to try and boost the look of the colour with purple eyeliner. (pictured right) This, I found somewhat more effective, but overall, I think it would still look better with black mascara.

So, sadly, I'm going to give this mascara a 3/10. Maybe I should have tried the bright blue.

Do you have any coloured mascara recommendations?

The Autumn Tag

So one of my favourite people in the world, Lauren, of Lipsticks + Lacquer,  tagged me to do the Autumn Tag. And since I'm so fond of her, I finally got around to it! Here we go!

1.  Ok we're talking coffee's - what's your favourite seasonal drink from Starbucks/Costa/Cafe Nero etc?
I love salted caramel mochas! But I do tend to stick to my usual, vanilla lattes :) The cold weather is making me crave minty things, so I might not wait and just start ordering peppermint lattes.

2.  Accessories - what do you opt for, scarf, boots, gloves?
I gave my black boots a pop of colour with rainbow shoelaces I bought on eBay, and ever since I've been wearing them a lot. I've also been more into scarves this year, I bought a new one for my Disney trip this summer and I've been wearing it a lot since, along with a bunch from last year.

3.  Music - what's your favourite music to listen to during Autumn?
Half Moon Run is the fall-est band. Like, every song reminds me of cool weather and leaves. So yeah, them.

4.  Perfume - what's your favourite scent for this time of year?
I don't really wear too much perfume, mostly because I prioritize my beauty money spending and perfume is rather low on that list. That being said, the one perfume I do have is Marc Jacobs Oh, Lola! and I wear that on special occasions all year round.

5.  Candles - what scents will you be burning this season?
I desperately want an apple scented candle right now. The only fall candle I have is pumpkin cupcake from bath and body works and I want to burn it but I can't find a lighter because my room is a disaster.

6.  What do you love most about Autumn?
Everything! It's my favourite time of year there's cool weather and halloween and I get to wear my leather jackets and sweaters and it's just great!!! F A L L !!!!!

7.  Favourite makeup look?
My tendency in fall is just to go bare faced with dark lipstick, but this year I'm trying to experiment more with blush and some warm colours for eyeshadow. We'll see how it goes.

8.  What are you looking forward to most in Autumn?
H A L L O W E E N
Me and my girlfriend are going as Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy I can't wait I'm so excited.

Thanks Lauren for tagging me! <3

Beauty and the Beast Cake

So yesterday we celebrated my roommate's birthday. Her actual birthday isn't until Wednesday but with everyone's busy school/work schedules yesterday was the best time for everyone. I was in charge of the cake, and since she loves Disney, and Beauty and the Beast is one of her favourites, I decided to use that as inspiration for the cake. It's also pumpkin flavoured, which is one of her favourite flavours and it felt very seasonally appropriate.

Overall I'm really happy with how it turned out, especially the rose! The fondant wasn't as smooth as I'd like, and there's a fair bit of icing sugar left on top, so those are just things I need to keep in mind for next time.

Sadly I didn't take progress pictures, but I'll link the recipes for the cake here and the fondant here.

How about you guys, what's your favourite Disney movie?

Lazy Beauty Tips Lipstick Challenge Roundup #1

So about a month ago, Kennedy and Sofie from Lazy Beauty Tips issued a challenge: wear a different lipstick every day, post a picture on social media and hastag it #lbtlipstick challenge. The idea here is challenge your perceptions of what it wearable, and to understand why you're hesitant about some of the lipsticks in your collection. I've been posting pictures nearly daily on my twitter, so if you follow me there you'll probably already be familiar with this whole thing.

So since I've been doing this most days since school started this term, there are quite a few pictures. Rather than post every single one here, I'm just gonna show off some of my favourites. The plan is to, from now on, make a weekly round up post. At this point there's 19 lipsticks down, 37 more to go.  (I own too much lipstick)

top left: Urban Decay Revolution in Catfight top middle: Maybelline Super Stay 24 Color in Continuous Coral top right: Maybelline Color Elixir in Vision in Violet
bottom left: Rimmel Moisture Renew in Let's Get Naked bottom middle: NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Addis Ababa bottom right: Bite Beauty Luminous Creme Lipstick in Violet

What`s the makeup product you have wayyyy too much of?

Review: MAC Rocky Horror Crazed Imagination Blush

A few weeks ago I found out a couple of things in quick succession. First was that the MAC Rocky Horror Collection that I had been counting down the days for was just in stores, not at counters. The second was that the mall across town was getting a MAC store sometime this fall. I talked to one of the girls at the MAC counter at The Bay in that same mall and she told me that they were supposed to open the same day as the collection was due out, but that they had already postponed the opening more than once.

At that point I had to weigh my options. If the store was opening that day, my best chance to get anything from the collection was to get there when it opened. The mall is a 50 minute bus ride from my house (or a 15 minute drive, god I wish I had a car on days like this). So to get there for the 9:30 mall opening, I'd have to take the 8:45 bus on my sleep in day to go to a store that may or may not be open.

I decided to go for it. I set my alarm for 8:00 and tried to get some sleep. No luck. I considered pulling an all nighter but eventually I gave in and went to sleep. In the morning I opened my eyes and checked the time only to find I'd slept through my alarm. I threw on some clothes and rushed out the door to catch my bus.

An hour later I got to the mall, and to my joy the MAC was open! And I walked through into the beautiful, brightly lit, monochromatic store... with no makeup on. That was a mistake. I asked for the blush, wanting to just grab it and go so I could take a nap before class. The store employee however, had different ideas. She sat me down and gave me a brush and left me to try it out.

Now anyone who loves makeup can tell you, some products just do not work on their own, and unless you have 100% flawless skin blush tends to be one of them. So I put it on, and it looked really bad. Sort of like a bruise. So the girl came back and looked at me, then at the blush, and went and got a bottle of their palest foundation so we could start over.

However instead of simply applying said foundation on me like is my typical experience at MAC, she gave me an interactive tutorial. Which is fair enough. And me, being me, said nothing. So rather than my planned, quick grab and go, I took an hour there. Learning how to do things I already knew how to do. But she was lovely! I'm not saying this was a bad experience at all, because she was absolutely fantastic.

So after an hour, and turning down all the other products she tried to sell me (including, sadly the Sculpt and Shape Powder, which like CURSE YOU WALLET!) I left the store looking much better than I had going in.

it doesn't show up super well on my phone camera but you get the idea

The colour is subtle and super wearable, great for fall. It's also rather long wearing. Though I love it I feel like I could have gotten a similar product for much cheaper from a drugstore brand, but I'm a sucker for theming and I love Rocky Horror so I feel like it was a good purchase.

Overall I'm gonna give this blush an 8.5/10

Okay I'm gonna acknowledge the elephant in the room here: I've been gone for a while. But I'm working on getting back into it, and I have a few posts planned as well as a couple of products coming in the mail I wanna review, so keep checking this space, there's gonna be a lot more content!

Tarte Glow Beyond

So I recently checked my email to find the above in an email from Sephora. I've been pretty near 500 points for a while now, and I've just been waiting for the right reward to cash them in. I've had my eye on the Tarte bronzers lately, so I knew this was it.

Over the next few days I'll be testing out the products and then I'll let you know what I think. I was just so excited that I had to share.

Thursday 5 June 2014

Shopping Trip!

Sorry it's been a while guys! Life's been a bit hectic. I've been at my parents' house for a few days, and the best part of that is that I get to see two of my favourite people, Lauren and Robyn! I've mentioned Lauren before, she runs Lipstick + Lacquer, and yesterday we went to Toronto for the day.

It's always fun to go makeup shopping with a fellow enthusiast, someone who will get emotional with you about how soft a blush is and how well it blends (we spent a lot of time being impressed at the Illamasqua counter)

I managed to contain myself to a certain extent, but I still picked up a few things.

(sorry about the wrinkly sheet!)

Ice Cream Wristlet: Betsey Johnson (@ Collacutt on sale + last one!)
NYC Smooth Skin Bronzing Powder in Sunny (@ Rexall)
Maybelline Dream Fresh BB in Light Sheer Tint (@ Rexall)
KIT Face Contour Brush (@ Rexall)
Colour Crush Lipstick in Coral Cutie (@ The Body Shop 50% off!)
Colour Crush Eye Shadow in Coconuts About You (@ The Body Shop 50% off!)
Regal Bib Necklace (their name not mine, I call it the boob crown) (@Forever 21)

Okay so I've been eyeing the wristlet for a while now. It's basically my exact aesthetic, and it was suuuuper on sale, so I had to get it right? My only problem is that it's small. Like really, really small. The cone is the part that opens up, there is no storage space in the ice cream, so my phone only just fits, and it's a bit of a squeeze. And I have a small phone. But it's gonna be great for the wedding shower I'm going to next weekend, and its sooo cute. So I still love it.

As for the makeup, I used all of it today. I'm going to see The Fault in Our Stars with Lauren and Robyn, so I figured I wouldn't go too heavy on the eye makeup, so I won't risk crying it off.

Other items included in this look:

NYX Kohl Brow Pencil in 922 Dark Brown
Benefit Blush in Coralista
Kat Von D Lock It Tattoo Concealer in Light 18
Covergirl Trublend Pressed Powder in Translucent Fair

Now I'm off to bake something for a movie snack!

What brand's makeup counter entices you the most? Let me know in the comments!
